In a year of precariousness, uncertainty and introspection, I returned my focus more toward investigating my own solo viola playing; specifically how the act of playing the viola (both amplified and acoustic) relates to the hopes and realities of internal, external, and interpersonal worlds. This was done in the form locating some of the visceral electronic, folk, heavy, and improvisational possibilities of the instrument, and by creating short videos with which to share the new (and some old) viola songs. Over the course of 18 months, these videos ultimately coalesced into this album, Permeating Scents // Wool Hat. Additionally, for this release, I am joined by two musicians who inspire me deeply, Yvette Holzwarth playing violin and hardanger on Permeating Scents, and Jared Rodriguez on modular synthesizer for a revisiting of Captive Lake Vortex.

The viola itself is a melodious, mellow, earthen woody creature, made of wood and played with horsehair, and I hope to present the viola here as a roving version of such a creature, finding places to dwell between the gravel and mud of the earth, the circuits of a synth, and the vapors of the sky.
