about

Marie Behnke née Malje talks about her early life, culture of her village, and the experience of immigration. See below for commentary from Frank Malje.

Marie's story is in many ways unique to her circumstance, as well being as a part of the fabric of a broader story of the migration of Donauschwaben (ethnic German speakers residing in parts of Eastern Europe) to Detroit, Michigan, USA.

ADDITIONS FROM FRANK MALJE
1. As Marie reported on St. Martin’s feast day the teens would pair off and promenade. Part of the celebration included the girls decorating the boys hats.
2. Some further grim details about Marie’s paternal grandmother ‘s death. After being discovered in the neighboring Serbian town trying to beg for food, she was beaten and then stripped and forced to walk back to Molidorf, naked, behind a wagon. Once back in Molidorf she was beaten again and later died.
3. The raw bacon was actually salted and cured. Dad says it was more like jerky.
4. When St Nicklaus visited it was his assistant, Ruprecht, who welded the whip. Both St. Nicklaus and Ruprecht were dressed in rags.
